| It all began in the early spring of 1987. Two members of a local southern California stamp club - the late Charles Lupo and Bill Brooks - were discussing how "lonely" it was being the only two members who collected the pre-Union states of South Africa (Cape of Good Hope, Natal, Orange Free State and Transvaal). Therefore, Chuck and Bill decided that they wanted to locate others in the U.S. who had the same collecting interests and form a specialty group. They placed notices about the formation of a pre-Union study group in Linn's, Stamp Collector, and The American Philatelist. Shortly after the appearance of these notices, the Pre-Union South Africa Study Group came into being with 16 founding members and the subsequent publication of the first issue of a 4-page newsletter in the Fall. |

PSGSA focuses upon all philatelic areas related to the following past and present stamp-issuing entities and areas: Anglo-Boer War, the Bechuanalands, Botswana, British Central Africa, Cape of Good Hope, Griqualand East/West, the Homelands, the Interprovisional Period, Lesotho, Local Posts, Malawi, Namibia, Natal, New Republic, the Nyasalands, Orange Free State/Colony, the Pre-Adhesive Period, the Rhodesias, South West Africa (German & British Periods), Stellaland, Swaziland, Transvaal, Union/Republic of South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Zululand.
To promote appreciation, understanding, increased knowledge and camaraderie through the mutual sharing of information and materials on the philately of greater southern Africa.
PSGSA has members located in the following countries: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Holland, South Africa, United Kingdom, and the United States.
The elected Society Board consists of the following positions: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Director/Marketing, Director/Programs, Director/Library & Archives, and Director/Publications.
Ex-officio members on the Board are the Society's International Representatives (IR's). The present compliment of IR's reside in Canada, Germany, Belgium, and South Africa. IR's are responsible for responding to inquiries about the Society, setting-up regional meetings and acting as a point of contact for members visiting their areas. A list occasionally appears in the Society Affairs section of the journal.
The Society journal appears three time a year with a total of over 100 pages of research, information and discussion. All members (and nonmembers) can submit articles and material for publication.
The Society has a publication committee that supports and promotes publication of books and monographs either involving the society or by outside publishers. The committee members offer advice and support for prospective authors. Contact the committee chair for information.
